How the skin is built

SkinTalks February 15, 2024

Hi there SkinTalks readers! This blog will be a bit different from the others: we are gonna talk about our skin. It's the body's largest organ, covering you from head to toe with its fascinating layers and remarkable abilities. From its protective role to its sensory wonders, your skin is a true marvel of nature. Get ready to explore your skin!

What are the layers of the skin?

The skin consists of three essential layers:

1. Epidermis

The epidermis, the outermost layer, serves as a protective barrier against germs, environmental factors like rain and sun, and harmful substances. It is composed of specialized cells called keratinocytes, which produce a protein called keratin that helps keep the skin strong and intact. The epidermis constantly renews itself by generating new skin cells, while shedding old ones.

It also contains melanocytes, which produce melanin, the pigment responsible for determining our skin, hair, and eye color. Moreover, the epidermis houses Langerhans cells, important components of the immune system that help defend against infections.

2. Dermis

Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis, a thicker layer that provides structural support and elasticity to the skin. It is primarily composed of collagen, a protein that gives the skin its strength, and elastin, a protein that allows the skin to stretch and snap back into shape. The dermis contains an intricate network of blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands.

Blood vessels supply nutrients and oxygen to the skin, while nerves enable us to perceive sensations such as touch, temperature, and pain. Hair follicles grow hair, sweat glands produce sweat for cooling the body, and sebaceous glands secrete oil to keep the skin moisturized and supple.

3. Hypodermis

The hypodermis, also known as the subcutaneous layer, is located beneath the dermis. It primarily consists of fat cells (adipocytes) and connective tissue. The hypodermis serves multiple functions, including insulation to regulate body temperature, cushioning to protect underlying muscles and bones from impact, and energy storage.

It also contains larger blood vessels and nerve endings that extend into the upper layers of the skin, maintaining connections throughout the body.

In summary, the skin's three layers work in harmony to provide protection, support, sensation, and regulation of various bodily processes. From the epidermis' role as a defense barrier to the dermis' structural integrity and sensory functions, and the hypodermis' insulation and cushioning, each layer contributes to the skin's overall health and functionality.

Now we do know a lot more about our skin. But to know which products are suitable for the skin, we also need to know our skin types and skin concerns.

What is the difference between skin types & skin concerns?

But first, let's talk about the difference between skin types and skin concerns. Your skin type is something you were born with and skin concern is something that develops as a result of something.

Examples of skin types:

• Normal skin

• Dry skin

• Oily skin

• Combination skin

Examples of skin concerns:

• Acne

• Fungal acne

• Hyperpigmentation

• Large pores

• Scarring

• Wrinkles

How do I know which skin type I have?

It can be hard to know which skin type you have. To know this, I have a little trick you can try:

1. Wash your face with a mild cleanser and wait 15 - 30 minutes

2. Do not use any other products in the meantime

3. After these 15 - 30 minutes, look at the skin types down below:

Normal skin: Your skin feels good and has no oily or dry parts.

Dry skin: Your skin is not oily and can (sometimes) feel tight.

Oily skin: Your skin has oily parts or is completely oily.

Combination skin: Your skin has oily areas. Often these are the parts on the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin), which are oilier than the rest of your skin.

If you know your skin type, you can search for products in the search bar on our website. Just add one of the skin types which soothes your skin the best, and you will find all the products that are most suitable for your skin!

Please keep in mind that when you get some new skin care, you will not receive direct results. For example make-up, It transforms your look upon application which can immediately lift your mood. Unfortunately, the same thing can’t be said for skincare, where you’re often left playing the long game to see any difference in your skin.

The key to everything is patience

As a general rule of thumb, dermatologists and skincare experts often advise that significant changes in your skin’s condition can be observed after consistently using a skincare product for around 1-2 months. This time frame may vary depending on individual skin factors, such as skin type, concerns, and the specific product being used. During this period, the active ingredients in the skincare product work their magic at a cellular level, addressing specific skin issues and promoting overall skin health.

Not all skincare products are created equal. The effectiveness of ingredients and formulations can vary greatly from one product to another. Some active ingredients may yield quicker results, while others may take longer to show visible improvements. Therefore, it's crucial to research and invest in products that are suited to your skin type and specific concerns. Anything that claims to impart an instant glow will usually only brighten your skin for a short period of time or feature light-reflective particles to give the illusion of a glow.

Your skin is like no one else's, and what works for someone else might not work for you. So, those timelines you see? Take 'em with a grain of salt!

The key here is patience. Glowing skin is not an overnight miracle; it's a journey. Sure, you can use those time frames as a rough guide, but don't stress if you don't see massive changes right away.

The real deal is finding products that genuinely work for your skin in the long run. It's not about a quick fix for the here and now. If you keep jumping from one product to another, your skin won't have time to adjust or improve. Consistency is the name of the game, my friend!

Final word

Stick with a routine that suits your skin, and give it time to do its thing. That's how you'll see real progress and get that coveted glow. So, don't get caught up in the hype of instant results. Embrace the uniqueness of your skin, be patient, and stay consistent. Your skin will thank you, and in the end, you'll be rocking that natural glow you've always wanted!

Love, Brittney
